Compare retaining wall estimates using the same dimensions, drainage route and restoration scope. Use this checklist to prepare a clearer request for Strata.

## Start with a project another person can recognize

A useful retaining wall estimate describes the wall, the ground it holds and the work proposed. A single total does not show whether demolition, drainage or restoration is included. Before comparing prices, make sure the proposals describe the same outcome.

[Strata Los Angeles Retaining Walls](/) manages retaining-wall work within the City of Los Angeles, with construction performed by appropriately licensed and insured contractors. When you bring an estimate for discussion, include the photographs or drawing that explain its scope. A marked photograph can be more useful than a long list of material names.

Give each wall a simple identifier, such as the driveway wall or the rear garden wall. If the property has several tiers, identify each tier separately. Do not combine them into one length and assume they function independently. The [terraced-wall scope](/terraced-retaining-walls/) explains why the relationship between levels matters.

## Check the measurement basis

Ask whether the quantity describes linear feet, exposed wall-face area or a complete defined structure. Exposed height may change along the wall. Buried foundation work is not visible wall-face area, but it can still be a substantial part of the job. An estimate should make its measurement basis understandable.

If two estimates use different units, do not convert one by guessing a height. Request the dimensions used by each bidder. For a curved or stepped wall, a sketch showing separate sections helps make the comparison fair. Our [Los Angeles cost guide](/guide/retaining-wall-cost-los-angeles/) distinguishes the published wall-face ranges from the rest of the project.

Note what has been measured and what remains approximate. A price based on photographs may have different assumptions from a scope developed after investigation. Neither the presence of a number nor the detail of a drawing proves that buried conditions have been established.

## Follow the scope below the finished surface

The estimate should identify the selected retaining system and the work required to build it. For a new wall, that discussion includes excavation, foundation preparation, the specified wall assembly and the handling of retained soil. Reinforcement belongs to the design; it should not be replaced with an unsupported promise that the wall will be extra strong.

Drainage needs a destination. A line item saying drain pipe does not explain how water reaches it, where it runs or how it leaves the property lawfully. Ask for the proposed route and identify any approval, elevation or access question still unresolved. See [drainage outlets](/guide/retaining-wall-drainage-outlets/) before treating two drainage allowances as equivalent.

When an existing wall is removed, ask what keeps the adjoining ground and improvements supported during construction. Temporary support may require its own design and installation scope. The [temporary-shoring guide](/guide/temporary-shoring-for-retaining-wall-work/) explains why it is different from the finished retaining wall.

## Separate allowances from exclusions

An allowance is an amount carried for an item whose final scope or cost is not yet settled. An exclusion means that work is outside the quoted scope. Those are different risks for your budget. Ask which party arranges each excluded item and what must happen before construction can proceed.

Compare engineering, soils investigation, permit work, testing and inspections individually. Do not assume a heading such as permits included covers professional report preparation or every agency charge. Ask what documentation the contractor supplies and which approvals remain your responsibility.

Access is another common source of differences. Hand carrying materials through a narrow passage is a different operation from working beside a suitable staging area. The [access and excavation guide](/guide/retaining-wall-access-and-excavation/) helps identify the conditions that should be visible in a proposal.

## Write down the finish line

List paving, planting, fences and irrigation affected by the work. Identify what will be protected, removed, reinstated or left for another trade. A completed retaining wall can still leave an unfinished yard if restoration was never included. Photographs taken before work begins provide a useful shared reference for that discussion.

Ask how a concealed condition changes the agreement. The proposal should explain who authorizes additional work, what information accompanies the request and how the price or sequence is revised. A clear change process matters more than an optimistic statement that nothing unexpected will happen.

Keep the final scope, approved changes and completion records together. Use the [wall planning worksheet](/resources/) to compare proposals, or read [how to read competing wall proposals](/blog/understanding-wall-proposals/). If the project is still at the idea stage, start with [retaining-wall installation](/retaining-wall-installation/) and describe what you want the ground to do.

## Questions about what should a retaining wall estimate include

### Should every retaining wall estimate use the same unit?

Not necessarily, but you need the same defined scope to compare totals. Request the dimensions and inclusions behind each price rather than treating a linear-foot amount as equivalent to a wall-face rate.

### What should I do with an estimate that lists drainage without an outlet?

Ask for the proposed discharge route and the unresolved constraints. Collection behind the wall is only one part of the water path; the estimate should explain what is included beyond that point.

### Can I compare a repair estimate directly with a replacement estimate?

Only after acknowledging their different outcomes. Identify what remains in the repair option, what condition assessment supports keeping it and which future responsibilities each option leaves with the owner.
